Kingdom Hearts

In Kingdom Hearts, a young teenage boy named Sora spends the first days we see him playing on a paradise island with his friends Kairi and Riku. He soon meets a dark figure that's right out of his strange dreams, and his friend Riku is lead through a door to darkness that Sora can't enter due to the light in his heart. Sora receives a weapon called a Keyblade that he can use to battle against agents of darkness and creatures without hearts, aptly called "heartless". Frantically fighting the darkness, Sora is overcome and is seperated from Kairi and the island.

When Sora awakes, he's in Traverse Town, an entirely different world and is soon recruited for his ability to use the keyblade by Kingdom that is threatened by the Dark. From here, Sora is joined by Donald and Goofy who accompany him on his quest to find King Mickey, defeat the Heartless that are taking over various worlds, and locate Sora's lost friends. When Sora first finds Riku, Riku is on the side of darkness and wants to fight. Sora drives Riku away with his heart.

Next Sora fights Maleficent and wins, and meanwhile, Riku has accepted powers of darkness and gains their strength. In their second meeting, Riku is actually Ansem in disguise, the cloaked figure that first appeared to Sora at the island and also a powerful scientist who's been conducting experiments dealing with the Heartless. We then find out that Sora has had Kairi's heart inside him since they separated, and she is a Princess of the Heart. Sora defeats Ansem and releases Kairi and the other princess' hearts by turning his keyblade on himself and opening the door to Kingdom Hearts. However, during this process he loses his own heart and becomes a heartless himself.

Fortunately, when Heartless!Sora leaps to protect Kairi, she knows it's him and is able to pull his heart back to him. After this, they escape but Sora goes back to close the keyhole and face Ansem one more time in the final battle which, of course, he wins. Even though defeated, Ansem threatens to release mass numbers of heartless on the world and Sora and his friends aren't strong enough to close the door. Fortunately, Riku at this time has regained his body and he and King Mickey close the door on the inside. Riku tells Sora to take care of Kairi and Sora is taken back to the islands.

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

Made for the Gameboy Advance and remade for the Playstation 2 under the title Re:Chain of Memories in March 2007, Chain of Memories takes placeduring the timespan between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. In the game, Sora, Donald, and Goofy continue to search for Mickey and Riku when a robed man confronts Sora and tells him he will find what he seeks but he will lose something dear. Sora goes ahead and finds himself at Castle Oblivion, which is pretty much a gigantic dungeon that saps the memories of whomever explores it. Inside, different doors open to all of the worlds he had visited in the course of kingdom Hearts but he remembers less and less of his travels and finds that the people he knew and called friends don't recall him either.

Somewhere in the depths of the castle, Riku has returned from the World of Darkness and is fighting his own demons as he climbs upward through the castle. In the meantime, we meet Organization XIII, who create a replica of Riku who pretty much believes himself to be Riku. Sora remembers Naminé, an friend he forgot, and ends up chasing the replica Riku thinking it's the original. Sora also learns that the hooded figure from the beginning was Marluxia, who is planting false memories in Sora in order to use him to harness the power of the keyblade and overthrow the Organization. Sora does find out that his memories of Naminé are fake, but he can't remember anything else besides memories of her. Naminé is able to admit the truth to Sora though with help from Axel, who is working as a double agent, playing the sides of the Organization and Marluxia.

Around this time, Sora forms an alliance with Replica!Riku who has turned on the Organization after finding out he's not the real thing and that his memories were also falsified by Naminé. With his help, Sora fights to the top of Castle Oblivion where he defeats Marluxia. Replica!Riku leaves to find out why he exits, and Sora seals the keyhole on the top floor before Naminé puts Sora, Donald, and Goofy into a stasis-like sleep inside a lotus-pod machine to help them regain their lost memories, even though it will mean they forget everything that happened in the castle. She tells Sora to hold on to the person who means the most to him.

While Sora was working through the castle, Riku spent his time fighting the darkness and Ansem, who tries YET AGAIN to gain control of his body but is stopped by King Mickey. When Riku arrives in Twilight Town, he finds out that the "Ansem" he met in the castle was actually DiZ, who sent Riku to speak with Naminé. Before he can get there however, Riku encounters Replica!Riku who wants to fight him and find out who's stronger. Riku kills the replica and finds out from Naminé that what's left of the real Ansem is still living in his heart. Riku talks to DiZ about this and decides to face Ansem, so he's let loose by DiZ. Riku defeats him, but realizes that he'll never truly be gone as long as there's darkness in Riku's heart. So, Riku decides to keep his darkness but keep it under control, able to harness it as well as light to fight for good.

Kingdom Hearts II

Kingdom Hearts is the actual sequel to Kingdom Hearts since you can really skip Chain of Memories without getting too confused. Set one year after the first game, the first scenes in this game are clips of Sora's adventures in Kingdom Hearts and CoM, followed by the introduction of Roxas who's shown in a very similar manor as Sora in the original opener.

For the first part of Kingdom Hearts II, you play as Roxas, a teen boy in quiet Twilight Town who is concerned primarily with his friends and the end of his summer vacation. In the last days of their summer, very odd things begin happening to Roxas. He dreams about being someone else and people he doesn't know and all the photographs that he was in were stolen. Stranger still, he's attacked by weird white creatures, haunted by men in back robes, and plagued by voices only he can hear. Roxas meets Axel during a town struggle tournament and is only more confused when Axel can't believe Roxas doesn't know who he is. Axel threatens to take Roxas back with him conscious or now, when DiZ shows up and stops Axel.

Unknown to Roxas, he is Sora's nobody and is living in a virtual simulation designed by DiZ to be a prison that will keep him occupied until Sora's memories are restored and Sora and Roxas can be merged. This is DiZ's plan to get revenge on Organization XIII. Frustrated and curious about who he really is, Roxas goes to the abandoned mansion in Twilight Town where he speaks to Naminé and finds out the truth. Wanting to become whole again, Roxas proceeds to merge with Sora, who wakes up in the real Twilight Town with Donald and Goofy and is sent on another mission by King Mickey to stop Organization XIII and find Riku.

Also, Maleficent has been brought back and is once again after power. Sora travels through various worlds again, some he's visited before, and fixes problems caused by the Organization, the heartless, and by Maleficent. During this time, Axel has kidnapped Kairi in an attempt to lure Sora to him so that he can find a way to separate him and Roxas again and get Roxas back. Sora finds out from King Mickey that Ansem is actually Xehenort, a student of the real Ansem the Wise. We also find out that Organization XIII's leader, Xemnas, is Xehanort's nobody and that the Organization is currently after the power of Kingdom Hearts.

Sora and co. travel through a passage in the virtual Twilight Town to the World That Never Was, the Organization's base, and they find Kairi and Riku who explain Sora and Roxas' relationship. DiZ turns out to actually be Ansem the Wise and tries to use a machine to take some of Kingdom Hearts' power, but it overloads and explodes, killing him. Sora battles Xemnas in several forms powered by Kingdom Hearts and Xemnas is ultimately defeated. Sora and Riku are taken back to the islands once again, where everyone is happily reunited.
