Organization XIII
the Thirteenth Order
Organization XIII is a group made up of thirteen nobodies first introduced in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts Final Mix. The thirteen are different than the common nobody, as they appear human and are able to fake human emotion even though they can't actually feel it. The sole purpose and ultimate goal of the organization is to unlock the secrets of Kingdom Hearts so that they can use the power to be complete human beings.
Roxas: "Organization XIII. They are a bad group."
Naminé: "Bad or good. I don't know. They're a group of incomplete people who wish to be whole. To that end, they're desperately searching for something."

The History
The first six members in the Organization are the nobodies of Ansem the Wise's apprentices, results of his experiments dealing with the heart. He and his assistants built an underground facility where they conducted their experiments using pretty much whatever subjects they could find. Eventually, Ansem decided his practices were wrong and withdrew from the project. However, Xehanort and his assistants saw no moral issue and pressed on, taking the testing too far until nobody versions of the assistants and himself (Xemnas) were created. At this time, Xemnas stepped up as leader of the nobodies and founded Organization XIII so that he could learn more about the heart and how to recover his own. Persuing this goal, his plan was to send heartless into different worlds so that Sora could kill them and release their hearts to bond with Kingdom Hearts in the World That Never Was and send more usable power to the Organization.

The numbers
Each nobody in the organization is identified by a number, 1-13. The numbers were assigned to members in the order in which they joined.

The dress code
The easiest way to spot an Organization member is by their clothes. A dark black robe with a zipper and silver chain seems to be the uniform, and most of the members tend to pull the robe's hood over their head to conceal their identity. Many of the members are fairly easy to pick out though, by their weapons which differ depending on the member's personal preference or strength.
'x' Marks the spot
The last outstanding attribute that marks the Organization is their names. It's no mere coincidence, as you probably already know, that each member's name contains an "X". The name of a nobody is simply the name that they had as a human rearranged with an added "X". IE, we know that Roxas' name is actually an anagram Sora's with the "X" in the middle. Several of the true names of the Organization's members have been revealed over the course of the game and the rest are pure speculation. Unfortunately, we never get to find out what Axel's real name was.
