significant places

icicle inn

This is the very place where Aerith was born. This is a small town located on the Northern Continent, pretty much on a hill. You come to this place just after Aerith died in the Forgotten city. You have to travel through the snow to get there and pass by Chocobo tracks, then go up the mountain/hill. The main tourist attraction of this town is snow boarding. There are snow boarders everywhere. You eventually get a really cool snowboard from a kid who can't go out, and then you get to do some snow boarding! Cool! The storyline that goes along with this town is that you go into the house at the far end and it turns out to be the place where Aerith was born. You find this out by going up the the monitor thing and choosing from a list of things to watch (Jenova Project, Unknown video's and stuff on Weapon). The stuff you find out is pretty significant, but you can keep coming back to check it out after you get the Highwind under your belt. You find loads out about Aerith's parents and who and what they did. Some of it is very cute.

midgar

Midgar is Aerith's home after her mother Ifalna died. It was where her step mother Elmyra took her in as her daughter. She lived in Midgar for a good chunk of her life, and then, of course, she left to go along with Cloud and the others. But before all that, a lot happened there. It was the place where Cloud met Aerith (well, the church that is), and was where she was finally kidnapped by the Turks. They concealed her in a glass tube along with Red XIII and wanted to do tests on her because she the last living Cetra. Also, the party found a lot out about Sephiroth and what he was doing. One of the best escapes occurred here. It was priceless.

gongaga village

This is a very small village located just north of the Gold Saucer across the small river. It is surrounded by a large forest and really just looks like a big black rock. Then again, the only reason it looks this way is because it once hosted a fairly large Mako reactor - the only problem is that it exploded and destroyed almost everything surrounding it. The town area looks like hell, has really sad music, and the houses's size are next to nothing if compared to a normal ff& house. They are tall and very thin. The significance of this town is that is was where Aerith first boyfriend Zack used to live. When you arrive there with Aerith and you meet Zack's parents, she runs off upset because he never came back - and she might have to confront the fact that he may be dead. (If you came here with Tifa in your party, she also runs off because she met him in Nibelheim and replaced his memory with Cloud's - complicated stuff I'm not willing to explain.). Zazk's parents notice that Cloud has Mako eyes (glowy green eyes when you have been injected with Mako), and ask him if he ever met a boy names Zack who was a first class soldier. It turned out that he hadn't come home for many years, but they still had hope that one day he would return.

Also after Cloud and the party returns here from the Temple of the Ancients (below), he has a dream in which Aerith appears to him. She forgives him for losing control and reveals to him that she is going to deal with Sephiroth by herself, and says that she will come back when it was all over. Then left him.

temple of the ancients

The Temple is located to the east on the eastern continent. The party goes here right after they find out that Sephiroth is trying to get this "ultimate destruction materia". Since Aerith is an Ancient, she knows almost everything about it and is permanently in your party for the time being. When you arrive there, you must go through all these obstacles just to get to the main hallway where the Black Materia is. Throughout the Temple there are strange markings and writings everywhere and it is all very eerie. Once the party gets the Black Materia, just as they are about the leave, Sephiroth shows up takes control over Cloud - and makes him physically beat on Aerith and then gives the Materia to Sephiroth.

the forgotten city

This place, I'd say, is the most significant of all. Cloud and the party comes here after Aerith leaves them to go and deal with Sephiroth. They have to go through the Sleeping Forest first, but once they through there, they enter a strange, almost "underwater" looking place. The music played is just plain freaky and all off the houses look like they are made of seashells. It is also completely deserted. In the houses there are glowing markings everywhere that you are unable to read - they resonate every time you press the "O" button around them. During the night, Cloud, Barret, and Tifa (or whoever is in your party at the time) decide to go right to the centre of the town. You enter a very large house by a pool of water and go down a spiralling staircase. This leads you to a whole new place. At the bottom of the stairs you find Aerith up on a an alter praying. You try to get to her, but Sephiroth kills her before Cloud can get a hold of himself. After Aerith is slain, Cloud takes her lifeless body to the pond of water and leaves her body to rest. It's very touching stuff.
