name
aerisAeris comes from the Latin language and is described as a wind aura; breeze or wind. Now, I think this completely relates to Aeris in almost everything she did and what she stood for. Aeris was much like wind. Her personality and easy-breezy (no pun intended) attitude matches her name perfectly. Even her main limit break at the beginning of the game is called "Healing Wind", so that just goes to show that the Squaresoft people knew what they were doing when they named her. Also in relating Aeris to the wind, her life was much like so. Her short existence came and went as fast as the wind, and yet her presence made such a significant difference in everyone else's lives. Whenever the party was in deep heat, she tried to smooth things over with her cool and relaxing personality.
aerith
The name Aerith is also from the Latin Language meaning Earth Ajala and in Hindu, it meant "the earth." Earth and wind can be two very different things with very different meanings. Aerith relates to the earth in her very nature; wanting to protect the planet from Meteor and praying for Holy. The earth meant a lot to Aerith because it was so precious to her and she didn't want it to be destroyed. Another one of her limit breaks, Planet Protector, says just that. I think her soul purpose was to protect the planet and everyone on it, with her pure white magic and abilities. Also like earth, Aerith was as hard as a rock. Her emotional strength was admirable, even after all she had been through. She was courageous and strong, doing justice to her name. So there you have it!
pronounciation
Trust me, when I first saw Aerith's name, I was like "HUH?" So, I've finally found out the right way to say it, now just work with me.
AERIS : AIR - ISS
AERITH : AIR - ITH
Pretty simple eh?
last names
Aerith has two last names being Gainsborough and Gast. Gast was her biological father's last name. Aerith is never called Gast in the game because she never lived under her father's roof, and didn't even know him for that matter. Her last name that is used in the game is Gainsborough, after her adoptive mother, Elmyra.
