black materia
Basically The Black Materia is the complete opposite of White Materia. Which just goes to show the very definite line between good and evil in Final Fantasy VII. Light fights against dark - simple as that.It is found out early in the game that Sephiroth desperately desires The Black Materia, and wont stop until he finds it. His motive is to destroy the Planet with this very powerful piece of magic, become absorbed into the Lifestream, and ultimately, become a God (yes, he is crazy).
When the term of Black Materia is first brought up, it is when the party is told of a black hooded man seeking the magic, and killing as he goes. Searching for Sephiroth goes as far as The Temple of the Ancients, and Cloud and the party come across a huge mural on the wall, that shows a picture of Meteor, that can be summoned by The Black Materia. Further down in the room that they found the mural in, is the actual Black Materia, which they discover cannot be removed unless someone solves a certain riddle. The catch is that whoever solves the riddle, must be destroyed along with the Temple itself. Luckily, Cait Sith offers up his toy body for the Materia, and was able to get the Materia to Cloud, who was outside the Temple. Unfortunately, Cloud allows himself to be manipulated by Sephiroth into giving up the Black Materia, and is controlled to attack Aerith who was waiting with him.
After the beginning of disk one, the party continues to look for Sephiroth and gain back the Black Materia - Cloud refused to lose it again. Inside the Northern Crator, they encounter Jenova Death, and manage to defeat her, and regain the Materia. Cloud the asks one of the party members whom he trusts to hold the magic safe until he returned form the Core of the Northern Crator. Unfortunately, Sephiroth manages to manipulate them again, and takes back what he thinks is his. This time, he really does summon Meteor. And after all the commotion is over, the big, red, burning rock of fire slowly falls to earth, with nothing standing in its way, but a small sphere sitting at the bottom a lake.
