aerith versus tifa
I would love to take the opportunity to argue whether Aerith and Tifa were friends or not, but I think if most of us are smart enough, we'll know the truth; being they were friends, no more and no less. Friends are there for each other, they help and laugh and have a good time with each other, and Aerith and Tifa qualify for all of the above. So enough said about that. What seems more significant to write about would the ongoing battle between the two heroines. It's very strange how there aren't many hate sites out there anymore, and if there are, I'm sure I would have had some flames in my guestbook by now but I haven't. I'm really starting to think that this battle that everyone thought would never come to an end, is actually coming to an end. Oh yes, there are still Aerith lovers who hate Tifa and visa versa, but you never hear from them much anymore. It's really died down, in fact I'm beginning to think it was the influence of conformity that drove people to think it had to be one or the other. You can't both love Aerith and Tifa, and yet people still did, and they went on with their web sites and valid opinions and they got by it. It is unfortunate that now we have silly things like Online Final Fantasys and sequel Final Fantasy's (ie. FF10-2) to argue over. It's getting really pathetic. Since when does Final Fantasy make a game where someone is actually signing and dancing? That's NOT what Final Fantasy is about- it is an RPG for crying out loud, not a poptart concert.
I'll be honest, I miss the old arguments between Aerith lovers and Tifa lovers. It kept things interesting. I wont deny that some of the arguments against Aerith were ridiculous (and Tifa as well) but it kept people within the flow of the game; it made it a legend. You see? This section is not about whether Tifa or Aerith were sluts or why they are friends, it's about the fact that their popularity is what made people so attached to them. It IS their skimpy dresses and funny personalities that get your attention. It can make you love them or hate them. Aerith and Tifa are the stereotypical heroines, and people like that, they don't give a damn about Yuffie, why? Because she lacks in any significance to the storyline, she's an optional character, and her personality is far too exaggerated.
So it hasn't come down to whether Aerith and Tifa were best friends, whether they were snaky whores, dumb characters or whether they had a one dimensional personality, it came down to the fact that they were like all other people. There was a love triangle, and they were silently fighting for the same man. That happens in real life all of the time. I think it is because we could relate to these women so well that they became such memorable characters. Gee, I wish I could fight over a guy who is as good looking as Mr. Cloud.
